What is institutionalism and how does it relate to art making?

Myron Leftwich: Institutionalism Definition

Alexander Villas: typically people who are institutionalized are individuals who have psychological disorders. often, people who have neurological imbalances have incredible attention spans and also, a penchant for the morose. the result is often a highly intricate work of art with very somber and often morbid undertones.a great example of this is a man named nick blinko. he was a singer for a punk band called rudimentary peni and was committed for a period of time in the 80's.http://www.outsiderart.co.uk/blinko.htm...Show more

Kalyn Proietto: Institutionalism is the theory that it is the art establishment (museums, dealers, galleries, art schools) that determine whether something is or is not art. Prior to the 20th century, this was not an issue, because it was widely accepted what was or was not art. However, in the current art market, where artists frequently make art from household items (Warhol's Soup) or instal! lations from trash, it is the institutions who decide what is or is not art.
