Gene Debell: A character reference can be from someone who knows you socially. So you may be friends with influential people at the Country Club who will vouch for your character etc. A business reference will be from someone at work, usually someone who's above you in the company hierarchy and knows you at work.
Torri Tippey: Your tutor would be a character reference as he/she would be giving their opinion of you as a person and student. A business reference would be someone with whom you have a professional relationship, such as an employer. A character reference woud be someone you know personally.
